Wilbur Goforth, President/GM

Goforth Media short history.
From the beginning Goforth Media Inc. has been a step of faith. WBHY Christian 840 was purchased in 1986 while it was in bankruptcy. The station was off the air and the tower was on the ground.
With 1,000 watts of power, the signal covered Mobile. WBHY received permission from the FCC to increase power to 10,000 watts in October 1987. The increase in power resulted in a wider coverage area and thousands of new listeners.
With WBHY-AM broadcasting programs and talk shows, we knew there was a need to acquire an FM station to broadcast music, a format geared to a younger audience, such as Contemporary Christian Music.
In 1991 this desire became a reality when we applied to the FCC for 88.5 FM and constructed a powerful radio station that would serve the Mobile, AL. and Pensacola, FL area known as POWER 88. In 1992, we began broadcasting and in 1994 began 24/7 services on WBHY-FM.
In 1995 WLPR Solid Gospel 960 went on the air as Goforth media's 3rd full time Christian station. Programming the Southern Music format.

My first real introduction to Christian radio, except for listening to “Southern Gospel” music sometimes, was as a bookkeeper for Mr. Goforth at another radio station. When he left that station and purchased WBHY-AM 840, I found out that he needed a bookkeeper, so I applied for the job and was hired…that was in May of 1986.
It has been a rewarding and exciting experience through the years as I have seen God’s hand in everything that has been accomplished at Goforth Media. God has proved sooo faithful in helping us to be able to do things that was needed to provide Christian programs and music to our listeners. My prayer is that Goforth Media, Inc will continue to grow according to God’s will and plan so that many more souls can be reached with the Gospel Message.

I started working at Goforth Media, Inc as a volunteer before I became a member of the staff. I enjoyed coming to help mail the newsletter and got more involved in the ministry of the station. There was a need for someone to answer the telephone in the afternoons, since I was going to be retiring from BellSouth the Holy Spirit impressed me to do this.
Since coming on staff I enjoy helping with other chores that need to be done around the station. I have helped with concerts by getting the volunteers to help. I also sign up underwriting for businesses. What ever the Lord has for me to do each day, I enjoy seeing what is being done to minister to the community through this ministry

One doesn't always get to pick one's friends. In this case we could and, happily, we picked, and were picked by, Goforth Media, Inc. and those good folks who work there. We have been with them from the start and have watched their faith and efforts work minor miracles. They have taken equipment others can no longer utilize and found ways to better the system they use to reach their audience. From an original wish to reach those within 50 or 100 miles, they now touch lives and minds virtually all over the world. And wouldn't it all be worth it if they only reached one life.We congratulate them and consider ourselves fortunate to be a small help to them as they work to fulfill God's aims and goals in this community and world that needs so much help. My adventure in radioland began at the age of 18. It was just WBHY-AM at that time. I was a senior in High School, worked an office job in the afternoons, and volunteered at the radio station on weekends. I did primarily production work, and occasionally filled in for announcers who needed to be off. When fall came, I took over the Saturday Morning Sign-On shift. With the celebration of a new year came preparations for Power 88 to make its debut to the airwaves. By March 1992 we were broadcasting the "GOOD NEWS" via contemporary Christian music along the Gulf Coast. My first go at FM radio also began then with my voice gracing the airwaves on the Sunday afternoon shift. Our 1st summer on the air I was given the opportunity to be the Morning Show Gal, which is quite amusing since I am NOT a morning person. Of course, that may explain why I was offered the chance to switch to the afternoon shift that Fall.

Robert Barber, Operations Manager

It is an awesome privilege to see and hear the results of Christian Radio in our community. Through letters and e-mails we receive personal testimonies everyday from individuals whose lives have been dramatically changed or touched in some way by hearing God’s word on one of our three stations.Whether a person prefers great Biblical Teaching, good Solid Gospel music, or the latest in Contemporary Christian Music, we have a station for them.I consider it a blessing to be part of such a ministry that reaches so many people with the word of God through word and song everyday.

Charlie Smith, Marketing

Working with this staff and helping in marketing and underwriting on our 3 stations is a joy. I am able to work with promoting concerts in this area. The idea of doing something you love to do is the greatest joy you can have. My daily routine involves working with church pastor’s, church secretaries, promoters of Christian concerts and Christian business owners. I have always earned a living selling but never with more satisfaction. I remember a verse from childhood II Corinthians 5:20 (NIV). It says "We are ambassadors for Christ, and God is using us to speak to you." If you are blessed by the message and music you hear on any of the Goforth Media station write us a letter or e-mail and tell us. We love to hear from our listeners.Charlie

Dr. Rick Cagle, Adisory Board/broadcaster

Working in association with Goforth Media and the 3 stations has become one of the highpoints of my life. My ministry (Evergreen Mnistries) has become like a sister ministry to this great organization and I love the people, the mission, and the medium of radio. I wish you could see as I do just how committed and loving this group is, they are the best! They are wonderful examples of responsible and Godly Christian service at its best. Our area is most fortunate to have this quality and vision among us. Pray for us in the days ahead that we may continue to be all God has created us to be to His glory.
Yours in Christ, Rick Cagle

Jane Goforth

These radio stations are run by a group of ordinary men and women under God's leadership. Everyday we get letters, Email and phone calls from our listeners telling how God is using our labor to draw them to Him.

Commander Chuck

Commander Chuck helps you find out what's happening on the streets...every morning on your way to work. Chuck is the area's only airplane pilot/helicopter pilot/reporter. He became an airplane pilot in 1992 and a helicopter pilot in 2001.
Keeping you informed of any potential problems that might be up ahead...It's Commander Chuck and Skywatch Traffic on Power 88. Radio with a vision.

Kenny Fowler, Music Director/Afternoon Drive

Hey! I'm the afternoon drive Show host and Music Director for Power 88. In addition to working at the station, I am also a youth minister at a church in Oyster Bay, Alabama. I'd like to thank all of the listeners who have called or emailed in encouragement to the staff at Power 88 and Goforth Media. We love to hear how God has used this ministry for HIS (and not our) Glory! Feel free to contact us if you ever need a song title or artist of a particular song you've heard on Power 88. We can't promise that we'll find it immediately, but we'll do our best! Also let us know what you think about the music you hear on Power 88. What would you like to hear more or less of? We are YOUR home for today's Christian music so let us know what you want!

Derek Long

I'm thrilled to be serving the Lord in such a positive way! I've been in the broadcast media for over 16 years, and this is truly a wonderful way to reach so many people with God's music and word. Everyone has been so nice to welcome me to the station, both the staff and the many listeners. And I look forward to being part of this family for many years to come. Psalm 18:30 says, "As for God, his way is perfect. The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in him." It is amazing what prayer and faith can do in your life. I feel so empowered by the holy spirit, I can only hope it comes across the air waves. Thanks for listening, and have a blessed day!

Alice Chateau

It was many years ago when I inadvertantly walked into my college's tiny radio station. Given the unexpected opportunity, I "opened" the microphone and spoke to a radio audience for the first time. An overwhelming,"I can DO this!" feeling hit me, and I've been at it (off and on) ever since. I already spent a great deal of my time with headphones on, as music was an obsessive part of my life at that point. (Anyone remember Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly, Cream, King Crimson, or Traffic?) The next 15 years or so were spent traveling (at illegal speeds) down the road to self-destruction, until I finally heard the sweet sounds of God's amazing grace that saved a wretch like me! In the glorious and wonderful way of God ("beauty for ashes"), He has allowed me to take my love for Jesus and my passion for music and use both in His service. Everyday in front of that microphone, I am humbled, honored, and exceedingly blessed by the privilege of participating in the ministry of Power 88.
To quote Johann Sebastian Bach, "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God, and the refreshment of the soul." Simply put, that's what I'm here for! Thanks for listening, and may you in some way be blessed!
